The Magic of Belief
The Magic of Belief: A Journey Through the Heart of the Holidays
This service embraces the magic of belief, whether it’s in Santa Claus, the power of human connection, or the wonder that resides in our hearts. Drawing inspiration from timeless holiday tales, we’ll journey together through a world where belief makes all things possible. Through the inclusion of personal stories and cherished traditions, we’ll reflect on how belief can create joy, bring hope, and inspire us to live with open hearts. We’ll also explore how choosing to believe in something greater than ourselves allows us to experience the magic that surrounds us every day.
The service will feature readings and reflections on the power of belief as it has shown up in our lives—whether through childhood wonder, the sacredness of the season, or the deep connection we share as a community.
For those who wish to participate, we’ll also offer an opportunity to contribute an item to the Nativity scene, symbolizing our individual and collective belief in something greater than ourselves. This act can serve as a personal reflection on the belief that drives us forward, as we come together to create something larger than the sum of its parts.
Themes and UU Principles Addressed:
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning: Belief is not about blind faith but a search for deeper understanding and connection. It’s a process of choosing what we hold dear and allowing it to guide us in meaningful ways.
The inherent worth and dignity of every person: Our belief in the magic of life and each other acknowledges our shared humanity and our capacity for joy, wonder, and love.
Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations: When we believe in the possibility of good things—like kindness, generosity, and the spirit of the holidays—we are more likely to act with compassion and seek out ways to lift one another up.
Respect for the interdependent web of all existence: The magic of belief reminds us that we are connected to something larger than ourselves, whether it’s the divine, the cosmos, or the profound interconnection of all life.
The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all: As we believe in a world of possibility, we are called to work together to build a community rooted in peace, love, and shared care.
This service encourages us all to embrace the magic of belief—not just during the holiday season, but as a practice that can carry us through life, helping us find wonder in the everyday and creating a sense of connection with all that is.
