Charity Begins at Home: The Inadequacy of Justice
In this service, we examine the limits of fairness and the deeper spiritual call to love. Through a beloved childhood classic, a wisdom tale, and a personal story of receiving in a time of need, we explore how justice—when isolated from compassion, and the many iterations and faces of love—can fall short of what humanity truly requires.
Themes and UU Principles Addressed:
Justice, Equity, and Compassion in Human Relations: The heart of justice is compassion—fairness guided by love.
The Inherent Worth and Dignity of Every Person: To receive and to ask for what we need is not weakness—it is trust in our shared humanity.
Acceptance of One Another and Encouragement to Spiritual Growth: Vulnerability and mercy, when honored, become pathways to personal and communal growth.
A Free and Responsible Search for Truth and Meaning: This service invites us to reimagine justice through story, spirit, and lived experience.
The Goal of World Community with Peace, Liberty, and Justice for All: Peace and equity grow not only from laws and systems, but from relationships rooted in love.
This service calls us to look inward and outward with new eyes—and to ask not only what is fair, but what is loving.
