Being Made Real:
Loving the World Whole Again
Being Made Real: Loving the World Whole Again
Service Summary: In this multigenerational service, we explore the story of The Velveteen Rabbit not as a tale of transformation for the toy—but for us. Through story, song, and reflection, we consider how unconditional love is what makes us Real. We are invited to remember what the child within us once knew: that all things are connected, all beings are worthy, and love is the force that binds the cosmos together. We reflect on the sacred task of learning to see again—not with judgment, but with the clear, wonder-filled eyes of the heart.
Themes and UU Principles Addressed:
The Inherent Worth and Dignity of Every Person: The story invites us to see and honor the unique spirit in every being, human and nonhuman alike.
Respect for the Interdependent Web of All Existence: The sermon highlights our spiritual and ecological interconnection with all life, affirming the wisdom of childlike perception.
Justice, Equity, and Compassion in Human Relations: We are asked to love without conditions and to unlearn the harmful -isms that distort our ability to see others as they are.
A Free and Responsible Search for Truth and Meaning: Rediscovering ancient, intuitive truths and animistic beliefs is part of our spiritual journey, especially those that reconnect us to wonder and reverence.
Acceptance of One Another and Encouragement to Spiritual Growth: This message encourages us to embrace vulnerability and transformation through love.
This service calls us to reclaim our sacred knowing—that we are not separate, that love makes us Real, and that in loving the world, we begin to heal it.
